About:

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — NYIT student-athletes regularly pitch in for good causes around Long Island and beyond. On Sunday, they helped their fellow NYIT students.

Working by team in shifts, student-athletes greeted families moving into the residence halls and helped carry belongings to individual rooms.

The Bears annually participate on move-in day.

“Too many times we put our student-athletes into bubbles and don’t let them experience college to its fullest,” said athletic director Dan Vélez, who pitched in by carrying a mini-refrigerator and other items between NYIT volleyball matches nearby at Recreation Hall. “Days like today, where we can step out of our comfort zone and off the fields and out of the gyms, and engage with our campus community are incredibly important to us.”
